HammerTech expands into renewables sector through major Spanish firm

HammerTech, the construction sector’s leading safety and site operation software platform, has expanded into the renewable energy sector signing a major global company.

Already well established in Australia, the Melbourne headquartered company’s software is being used by 86 of the country’s top 100 construction companies to improve their safety and efficiency. In 2023, HammerTech grew its operations in the US and Canada and expanded into the New Zealand, UK and Ireland markets.

It now has 450 companies globally using its HSEQ software managing 80,000 workers.

This year HammerTech has added Spanish engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) giant, Gransolar Group, to its portfolio.

Madrid-based solar plant construction firm, Gransolar, employs over 1500 staff globally and will act as engineering, procurement and construction contractor for two solar projects in Australia:

  • The Wellington North project near Dubbo which will be one of the largest photovoltaic projects in the country with a capacity of 425 MW. It involves 755,552 photovoltaic modules spread over 847 hectares, producing enough clean energy equivalent to the consumption of more than 152,000 households

  • The Wunghnu solar plant in the Goulburn Valley with a capacity of 90 MW consisting of 160,048 modules over 222 hectares, enough to power 27,152 homes

HammerTech CEO Ben Leach said 2023 had been one of the company’s biggest. “Growing our footprint in North America was a great achievement and then to also successfully launch and win business with progressive contractors in the UK and Ireland is a testament to the quality of our platform and our team,” he said.

“As part of HammerTech’s next stage of growth, we see the renewable energy sector as a key stage in our journey. Our software is trusted by commercial contractors and has now also proven to be flexible and comprehensive to support safety workflows for EPCM’s as well as new sectors including renewables and infrastructure.”

At the start of 2023, the number of large-scale renewable projects either under construction or financially committed in Australia was 72, according to a report by the Clean Energy Council. Of these projects 48 were solar, 21 were wind and the remaining three were bioenergy ventures.

With so many projects under way – and the Australian Government committing the country to have 82 per cent of our energy from renewable sources by 2030 – the outlook is promising.

HammerTech digitises all workflows so that subcontractors – which make up a large part of the workforce on renewable projects - and workers can connect with all safety and site operation processes in one place. In an industry with a high volume of young foreign workers in an overseas country for the first time, working in remote areas, outdoors in extreme conditions, supporting the safety of a culturally diverse workforce is a high priority. HammerTech enables multi language options to assist workers as well as help site managers to quickly identify and solve issues as well as improving accountability with gathering deeper learnings to mature safety programs.

Gransolar’s Work, Health and Safety Manager in Australia, Jonathan Garton, said his company had chosen HammerTech because it provided a good balance between what was already built into the platform and the opportunity to customise as needed.

“Before HammerTech we were running projects in Excel and on bits of paper and having to scan. It was very administrative intensive. Now we have much greater efficiency and visibility.”
